Ned Rorem - 15 October, 1994

from Lies: A Diary 1986-1999, page 258:

Tea here with Ellen Zwilich and Eric Lamont... The occasion: to hear Ellen's two new concertos, one for bassoon, one for trumpet. Collating the sound of the Bassoon Concerto with the sight of the score, which we followed assiduously as suave pros always do when score's around, what we heard contradicted what we saw, the fact of the soloist being more raw than her (for she was a woman) sleek careful line on the page.
