Charles Burney in France - early December, 1770
from Music, men and manners in France and Italy, 1770 / Charles Burney, page 220:
In Provence and Languedoc through which I passed the songs of the country people are rather pretty - I got 'em to sing me some whereever I stopt - and the airs are national and simple - less wild than the Scots as less ancient, but I rather think these melodies the oldest since the invention of Guido's system.
