I was called by an English Gentleman to hear the singing of the Men working the Engine [of the boat]. I cannot describe the singularity of the Effect: one heard a slow elegant hymn like Melody, sung in parts, admirably in Tune, and when one got near, to hear more distinctly, you saw four Men, almost as black as Chimney Sweepers, turning the Wheel with the red glare of the Furnace gleaming on their dark Countenances…. I was delighted, and almost succeeded in persuading myself that I saw and heard Schiller’s Song of the Bell
