Dear Lenny
Merely a line to tell you that 1) you nearly caused me to have an accident and 2) I heard a performance of Mahler Second that was more overwhelming that anything I remembered even you ever having done - and that goes back to my unforgettable first encounter with the work, singing it as a teenager under you at Tanglewood.

The listening experience took place in a car on a journey from Lenox MA to New York City. Leonard Marcus, a Harvard music graduate (like Bernstein), was appointed editor-in-chief of High Fidelity and Musical America, a post he held from 1968 to 1980. He later worked at Columbia Records and as editor of Carnegia Hall’s programmes.
