The ritual seemed best performed by eight little scarlet-robed Syrian acolytes. The singing which proceeded from a choir behind the altar was credible (canons and simple frugal movements being attempted) rather than agreeable, and could anyway never have done much good with an organ composed exclusively of the cheapest and tinniest reeds. About forty British officers sitting behind us, and on out left including eleven up in the pulpit, the crowd.
