As for Louis [Armstrong] himself, when he walked onstage I shed a tear, though I was naturally careful not to let my mates see. The music that followed was frankly a bit perfunctory, despite the presence in the band of Trummy Young, Billy Kyle and the great Edmond Hall; but knowing what we do now about the almost inhuman touring schedules that Louis endured, it's a miracle we heard any notes at all from the most famous trumpet player in history.
