A performance of Fidelio is unforgettable because the Florestan happened to be sung by a very obese tenor (with a fearful squint) carrying what is impolitely called a Bier-Bauch. When in the Dungeon Scene he rose from the straw in a starving condition imagination flatly refused to support the illusion.
