Paul Mares, and the [New Orleans] Rhythm Kings, then, were our earliest inspiration. But we listened to everything we could. We sometimes went down to a Chinese restaurant, the Golden Pheasant [Chicago, 1920s] where there was a band by the name of Al Haid. They played pretty good, a semi-commercial brand of jazz, so we used to go down and eat chop suey and listen to this orchestra. It wasn't as good as the NORK--but we listened.
