Go straight to Sadler's Wells, where I have a bit of a meal (meeting Kenworthy - late of Holt) & meet Bridges (up in town for a few days) and go to Ballet at 8.0. V. good Ballet with Anton Dolin & Markova etc. [Britten leaves a long gap here] by Gretry,* rather uninteresting. Manhattan Serenade, ** solo by Dolin - marvellous. Poor music by Geoffrey Toye in a very amusing "Douanes" with Dolin & Ninette de Valois.*** Sylphides**** to end with. Back with Bridges to supper.

*Gretry Pas de Deux, Constant Lambert's arrangement of excerpts from Zemire et Azar (1771), and Lephaleet Procris (1773) and L'embarras des riches (1782) by Andre Ernest Modeste Gretry (1741-1813). **Manhattan Serenade, solo for Dolin choreographed to one of the hits of the Swing Era, composed in 1928 by Louis Alter (1902-80). ***Douanes [Customs] (1932), comic ballet by Ninette de Valois about the daily life of a French customs office. ****Les Sylphides (1907), short non-narrative ballet by Fokine with music by Chopin orchestrated by Glazunov.
