Fletcher Henderson in New Orleans - 1922
from Hear Me Talkin' To Ya: The Classic Story of Jazz as Told by the Men Who Made It, pages 202-203:
It was back in 1922, down in New Orleans, when I heard this young man playing the trumpet in a little dance hall. I was accompanist for Ethel Waters, who was the headline attraction at the Lyric Theatre, and I decided that the youthful trumpeter would be great in our act. I asked him his name and found he was Louis Armstrong.
[...] I didn't expect him to accept the offer, and I was very surprised when he came to New York and joined us.
