I remember Lester Young from when he was blowing cool sounds at the Subway on Eighteenth Street back in Kansas City. This was a small place with only one entrance, really a firetrap, yet groovy. The first time I heard Lester I was astonished. It took him several choruses to get started--then, brother, what a horn.
