On Sunday afternoons, in the early 'forties, some of the guys would get together at my house. [Thelonius] Monk, Dizzy [Gillespie], John Collins, Ben Webster, and others. We'd have little sessions listening to records. We'd listen to a lot of Hawk's [Coleman Hawkins'] records. He was making some in Europe that we'd get. And we'd play things of our own [… while] my wife would be in the kitchen cooking us something to eat. Then on Sunday nights we'd go to Lewisohn Stadium when the symphonic session was on. "We're going to church," we used to say.
