Ralph Vaughan Williams in Royal Festival Hall - the 1950's
from Southbank Centre Archive:
I saw it under construction and witnessed the acoustic trials. I remember in the very early days sitting by Ralph Vaughan Williams who was in Robin Day's plywood foyer chairs. The seat back and sides were in one piece. Vaughan Williams was broadly built. When he got up he found the chair clipped to his backside!
