No one ever sang those earlier songs of mine, “Absent, yet Present,” “To Blossoms,” “Heureux qui peut Aimer,” “ When Passion’s Trance,” “To Electra,” and “The Devout Lover,” like Santley. The way he sang the closing phrase of the latter song was so beautiful and touching that those who never heard it can hardly imagine the difference between his interpretation and that of every one else.
