I also discovered that some of the great American jazz and swing bands were still in existence, though struggling […] BBC2 booked them. So Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Woody Herman and Ella Fitzgerald all came to Britain and it was one of the pleasures of the new Controller [David Attenborough], after a day at his desk on the sixth floor of the Television Centre, to go down and listen to these superbly professional bands rehearsing in one of the studios on the ground floor.
