Another invitation arrived from the Governor.  There would be a big party at Government House on Christmas night.  We were welcome to that too.  Most of the citizenry of Port Stanley seemed to be there […] The climax of the evening came when he [Rex Hunt, the Governor] produced a wind-up gramophone with a pile of 78 rpm shellac records and we all sat drinking rum, gin and whisky listening to Louis Armstrong, Sydney Bechet and Bessie Smith singing to us through a hurricane of hisses and crackles.
