Alan Plater in Newcastle upon Tyne - 1990
from Doggin' around, page 167:
What Ian and the band did was extraordinary. When the name Duke Ellington was mentioned, we heard an instant Ellingtonian quote on trumpet - likewise Coleman Hawkins - and so on throughout the play. By definition, there was no knowing in advance precisely when these moments would be. The guys had to listen intently, pick the moment, play the phrase and still, in the great musical tradition, finish level. Only jazz musicians would be capable of doing it.
