Mme Debussy told Ptashka that she approved of the independence of my music. 'You understand what I mean,' she added, and given that the preceding work had been her husband's Nocturnes, which she has heard with tears in her eyes, and before that Stravinsky's performance of his Concerto the opening bars of which were lifted straight out of his own Nightingale, one can only imagine that the implied criticism was aimed at him.
