To believe, Marie-Blanche, that I have no leftish leanings is to know very little about me. I thought I had long ago given proof that popular fronts are dear to me and I confess that what pleased me about  Le Quatorze Juillet was really the audience. All this is very complicated.

The Popular Front Government celebrated its accession to power in 1936 by a gala theatrical performance of Romain Rolland's 1902 drama, 'Le Quatorze Juillet'. The composers commissioned to write the music for this patriotic pageant were Koechlin, Roussel, Honegger, Ibert, Auric, Milhaud and Daniel Lazarus.
