Edward Wright in Venice - in the beginning of the 1720's
from Some Observations made travelling through France, Italy etc., in the years 1720-1722, page 103:
They had at Venice splendid Evening Litanies at an Altar under the Procuratics, which was brightly illuminated. The Litanists waited the Motions of a Mountebank who practis'd just by; and as soon as his Affair was over, the Bell rung for the Congregation to adjourn from the Piazza to the Portico; 'twas in vain to offer at it before.
