Alice Maud Chase in Portsmouth Guildhall - between 10 January, 1941, 12:00 AM and 1960

from The memoirs of Alice Maud Chase, page 48:

[Portsmouth Town Hall was hit by German bombs on 10 January 1941. It was re-built and re-opened in June 1959. When Portsmouth was raised to city status in 1926 the town hall was renamed Portsmouth Guildhall].

I stood out in Linden Grove [in Gosport] and saw the light in the sky of a hundred fires the night [Portsmouth Town Hall] was burnt down. Now it has been rebuilt and I have been there and heard the “Messiah” sung again after twenty years and enjoyed every minute of it. There is no doubt about it: I have lived.
