Verbena Daphne Brighton in Gissing Hall, Norfolk - 19 July, 1919
from Nuts in May: memories of care-free days, pages 8-9:
[Peace Day marked the end of World War I]
Another early memory was of Peace Day. There were celebrations at Gissing Hall in the beautifully kept park and gardens. Everyone was there including Father with his Cockle Stall. A gramophone with a large horn bellowed forth ‘The Minstrel Boy’,fireworks exploded in all directions and a donkey who evidently objected to giving rides to children opened his mouth and displaying yellow teeth let out a war cry which so terrified me that I had to be brought home and put to bed.
