Violet Austin in Lee, south-east London

from Untitled: Mrs. Violet Austin memoir, page 20:

[Violet Austin was the youngest of four siblings]

The Aunt and Uncle who lived at Lee [near Lewisham] were the only relatives close to our family except for our grandfather, our mother’s father. He was a darling, happy man, who spoiled us all.

We children would stay with our Aunt and Uncle, but only one at a time. They were not used to children. We loved them. Uncle would let us try to play his zither and we read Aunt’s very uplifting books “The Wide Wide World”, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” etc.
