Peter Hawker's daughters et al. in Winchester - 20 September, 1839

from Journal entry, 20 September 1839, page 168:

A treat worth all the game shooting in the world. Thalberg at Winchester for his farewell performance. Drove the girls over, and a delightful treat we had, as he was far more extraordinary than when we last heard him in town; his miraculous combination of working in four parts with intense feeling and electrifying execution decidedly proves him to be the greatest pianist that ever sat before the public.
