We had a man in our village who had twenty five children by his two wives. His name was William Carter. He gave most of his boys Bible names. Some of them were my school companions. On one occasion, Mr. Carter and ten of his sons played a cricket match against the rest of the village […] During the first world war, ten of his sons were in the army and three or four lost their lives. At least four of his sons married and lived in their native village. They all had large families ranging from eight to ten each.
