Notes
Peter Smith Dawson (1882-1961), an Australian of Scottish parentage, gained world renown through song recitals. A song writer as well as a singer, he performed in England in the early 1900s. Frank Mullings became the leading English tenor with Sir Thomas Beecham's Opera Company / the British National Opera Company shortly after the period Gill describes.
