Fifth Viscount Torrington in Cheltenham - 23 June, 1781

from Tour to the West, 1781, pages 35–36:

We dined with my old schoolfellow, and riding house companion Ld F: much discourse about our former days and modern politics, with too much wine; and I went, rather heated, to the play house to Love in a Village.Sing-song performances are generally ill-perform’d, and allways make me melancholy, as I feel for their want of abilities, and pity their distress: what can become of a failing actor, or a failing running horse, being both unequal to the business of common employments?
