When I was thirteen and [sister] Sally was ten, we went to the Three Choirs Festival in Worcester Cathedral for a performance of one of my father’s most beautiful pieces, his cantata The Sacred Dance, coupled with the first performance of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s great oratorio, Hodie.  There the great composer sat Sally on his knee and told her that, if ever our parents tired of her, he would adopt her.
