Dreadfully wet evening but got on well.

O[rgan]. – Small in West Gallery; rather florrid [sic]. My companion said that the service was Dykes and he thought it good.
[The congregation numbered] 500 A curious gathering - many poor girls, some working men and some elderly gentlemen.
S[ermon]. – [We d]idn't stop.
[…]
M[iscellaneous]. – Rain dripped on me. We moved. Everything cosy and irregular. Seats all anyhow. One man in Choir called out Thanksgiving defiantly.

Henry Croswell (1840–93) kept a record of his visits to churches in London over a period of more than twelve years (1872–85). He made methodical notes about the number of clergy, the churchmanship, the congregation, the sermon and the church architecture, as well as commenting on the music that he heard (the organ, the hymns and the choir).
