John Simon phoned this evening to say he was enjoying WNCN's Birthday Salute to me. In the background, behind the phone's static and John's Transylvanian syllables, I did detect the ripple of my Barcarolles. Should one tell a composer during his music that one likes the music? John does believe in hissing plays, but only after a performance.
