Ned Rorem in Nantucket - 23 May, 1979

from The Nantucket Diary of Ned Rorem 1973-1985, page 244:

Listening to the record of Sweeney Todd, undistracted by the sordid images on stage, the music seems more solid, replete with echoes, there are some good tunes (some terrible), and Angela is irreplaceably musical. Inconceivable that her role be taken by a true diva, though there's talk of it, opera (in all it's trashy glory) being a sacred word to Broadway.
