Ned Rorem in New York - 1944

I first heard Wozzeck, or parts thereof, when Ben Weber played me the air check he'd made of Eileen Farrell and Bernard Herrmann's midnight performance on WOR. It was around 1944, and I was as bowled over eight years earlier by Le Sacre.
