Ned Rorem in New York - 3 November, 1986

from Lies: A Diary 1986-1999, page 41:

The one weekly TV program I try not to miss is Apostrophes, intellectual and well choreographed. It is also French to the core. Fro example, tonight: each of the five guests managed to substantiate some thesis by quoting Racine (a playwright unknown in America). Meanwhile, the hypothyroid theme music is Rachmaninoff's First Piano Concerto. The French literati know all about their culture and only their culture; but, like the American literati, know nothing of their music.
