Ned Rorem in New York City - 16 October, 1989
from Lies: A Diary 1986-1999, page 178:
Practicing on seven beautiful but sweaty Mahler songs in preparation for rehearsal with Auger next week. Despite their beauty, I take little pleasure in them, unless I find some French kinship. Chopin, perhaps, occasionally? Certainly the saddish aimless modality of Chopin's A-minor mazurka is refracted six decades later in Mahler's Erinnerung, measures 19-21.
