William Gardiner in London - May, 1791
from Music and Friends: Or, Pleasant Recollections of a Dilettante, pages 152-153:
In the evening I attended the opera. The house was just opened, and had a most splendid appearance. The boxes were lined with sky-blue satin fringed with gold. Here I heard to more advantage the tenor singer, David, who had sung in the Abbey in the morning; he had been taught the words of Handel’s song, ‘His mighty arm with sudden blow,' which, as a Frenchman, he pronounced worse than the Italians, but his powerful voice covered all deficiencies.
