Earlier that day, because David Diamond's Piano Quintet was to be premiered elsewhere the same evening, I attended a rehearsal with him. The piece is sturdy, businesslike, adroit, expertly "telling" for the instruments, not too poetic, but healthy, like David himself whom I hadn't seen since his last return from Italy.
