Ned Rorem in Juilliard School

from The Nantucket Diary of Ned Rorem 1973-1985, page 39:

What Callas imparts (through her handsome mock-humble still of Regular Gal, no-nonsense, let's-get-down-to-work - and she's a dead ringer for Rosemarie Beck) is not more exceptional than what any intelligence imparts: Pretend you understand the words, sing them like you mean them. Alan Rich seemed impressed by her advice for hitting a high C: "Think B!" which not think D-flat? But I'm not a singer. And not being a singer I learned little, for how much nuance can be disclosed in Bellini?
