I have just done something, or rather refrained from doing something, for the first time: heard the world premiere of a major piece of mine, without having attended any rehearsals. Partly from laziness, partly from fear of being far from home, and partly from curiosity about the risk I was running, I arrived in Cincinnati too late for even a consultation, much less a dress rehearsal, of the Double Concerto which finally had its first performance yesterday.
