Ned Rorem in Merkin Concert Hall - 14 September, 1986

from Lies: A Diary 1986-1999, page 33:

Eight-hour marathon, called American in Paris, yesterday at Merkin Hall to honor Virgil's pending ninetieth birthday. Will & I performed Banalités (which I've been playing beautifully since before Will was in diapers, but which he said I "rushed"), two songs of mine (including "Early in the Morning", appropriately, which Crutchfield calls my "best song", but which, of course, isn't), and two by Virgil (including "The Little Black Boy," in his best hand-crossing antimacassar style, on Blake's vaguely racist verses, during which a Negro in the front row arose and walked out).
