James Holmes et al. - 19 July, 1990

from Lies: A Diary 1986-1999, page 199:

Sondheim sent a tape of Assassins. It makes an iffy first impression. JH likens Sondheim to Paul Bowles. Neither gives an inch toward alowing affection into their work. An aloof meanness is ever there, not as a device but as an end in itself.
