James Holmes et al. in New York City - 23 February, 1991

from Lies: A Diary 1986-1999, page 210:

Ellen Zwilich's new Oboe Concerto - expert, gloomy, theatrical, but without drama. JH feels she can't last. Why? Because there's nothing to oppose - true acceptance comes only after some dose of rejection, while Ellen is nearly everyone's darling and the dissenters are merely indifferent.
