William Gardiner - early 19th Century
from Music and Friends: Or, Pleasant Recollections of a Dilettante, page 681:
Neükomm's song, entitled 'The Sea,' and some of his sacred cantatas, are very beautiful, but his 'Napoleon's midnight review,' and 'King Death, with his coal black wine,' are frightfully grand. I was in a party, one evening, where the latter was performed, which so much excited the feelings of a young lady present, that she could never bear to hear it afterwards.
