Alan Plater in Hull - the 1940's

from Doggin' around, page 11:

As I drifted into my teens, jazz and swing took a serious grip on my imagination, courtesy of the wireless.  There was a BBC Jazz Club to listen to on a Saturday evening...and Jack Jackson would sometimes sneak a Stan Kenton record onto his late night record show...The first time I heard 'Cottontail' it was played by Geraldo's orchestra, of all people, on his weekly programme, and the fact that I remember this says it all about the growth of my obsession.
