Dr William Plumer Jacobs in Charleston - 6 July, 1858
from Diary of William Plumer Jacobs, pages 23-4:

Well, again I dozed. But before long, O, the noise, the shouting and screaming, the songs and choruses. And this is the Fourth of July.
