Dr William Plumer Jacobs in Charleston - 6 July, 1858

from Diary of William Plumer Jacobs, pages 23-4:

The first sound that reached my ears this morning was the roaring of the cannon, mingled with the fife and drum. Together with Ripley pushing Presley and Presley's holiday hurrahing. Well, again I dozed. But before long, O, the noise, the shouting and screaming, the songs and choruses. And this is the Fourth of July.
