The evenings seemed rather dull, as I knew of no library where I could procure books, though I managed to borrow one or two privately. There was not a great deal to be seen walking about, but I sometimes dropped into a saloon which, I think, formed the first story of an hotel in what was then the Rossin Block in King Street.

There was generally a good violinist and pianist at night, who played high-class music.
