Ned Rorem in Nantucket - 11 January, 1986

from Lies: A Diary 1986-1999, page 61:

Although I admire much of his music for its terse humour and pathos, Francis Thorne's Fifth Symphony trudges on without a smile and with too much unintegrated percussion - drums used strictly as decoration, like exclamation marks!, or like perfume on a corpse. And it's too long.
