Ned Rorem in New York - 20 June, 1987

from Lies: A Diary 1986-1999, pages 94-95:

The Bernstein versions of the six Paris Symphonies combine austerity with élan, loveliness with snap (with Scotch snap?), and extreme slowness with extreme fastness - they come alive. Still, I find them hard to hear, to concentrate on. So steeped are we in such classics on the radio that they've become wallpaper.
