Ned Rorem in New York City - 14 October, 1990
from Lies: A Diary 1986-1999, page 200:
Listened to Assembly and Fall, the 25-minute unrevised version, for the first time in a decade. What an overreaching, pretentious mess. It's my most diffuse, willfully ugly piece, aimless and exasperating. But the last five minutes are masterful, frightening and original in their evocation of hopeless eradication.
